Last week the minister of police, Minister Bheki Cele, released the quarterly crime statistics for South Africa. For the next couple of days it will be a focus of all the main media channels and then nothing until the next time statistics are released. As South Africans we need to have a more consistent conversation on crime focusing on which are the priority police stations at a national and provincial level, what are the driving factors associated with particular crimes and what we should be doing to fight crime in our country. AfricaScope SA is starting its series on “Conversations on Crime” on Thur 20 May at 11am with Dr Chris de Kock with the first webinar focusing on street/public robbery. This is probably the most feared crime of all in South Africa because it occurs in public spaces where people are the most vulnerable and the risk of harm is high. Come join us and lets talk about what we can do about crime in our country.
