A question was posed whether one person infected with COVID-19 could allow the pandemic to continue to spread indefinitely. Michael O’ Donovan, a data scientist and demography, indicated that based on available data, once the curve has flattened and ultimately declined, there should be no further infections. The spread of the pandemic can be controlled by using social distancing, the wearing of masks and the continued monitoring of the disease at a local level. The true impact of COVID-19 in South Africa will be from the economic consequences of poverty, malnutrition and other forms of deprivation in the future. In other countries of the world like Ireland and New Zealand because of the social welfare state it is highly likely that there will be less of an economic impact than in South Africa with its 40% unemployment rate.
