Michael O’ Donovan believes the state has over emphasized the positive aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa. This is based on a statistical analysis of various data sources that show for example that the infection rate among health workers at 5% is half that of the global average. Furthermore, that the fatality rate among health workers is 0.9% which is very low. Similarly the fatality rate in the general population is half that of the global average. South Africa is not any different to how the disease has progressed in many other countries. This is a reflection of the poverty of data provided by the state. By modelling the pandemic it can be seen how South Africa is doing relative to the projected trajectory of Covid-19. However, if one models the projected growth and actual trajectory of the pandemic in South Africa there is a “perfect” match. Suggesting that the pandemic is “keeping to the script” – it is doing what is anticipated and measures implemented by the government have not deterred Covid-19 from its trajectory.
