Mapping Social Survey Results

Understanding Socio-Economic Trends in South Africa’s Township Using KasiSurvey & Circle Point Analysis

South Africa’s townships are evolving into important potential markets for economic development in South Africa but continue to endure socio-economic challenges.

GeoScope’s innovative tools, KasiSurveys and Circle Point Analysis provide invaluable insights into township dynamics, allowing for informed decision-making and the targeting of key interventions.

Analysis of Statistics South Africa’s 2022 General Household Survey data, KasiGHS as part of KasiSurveys and Circle Point Analysis, allows for the first time comparisons of socio-economic factors between townships and non-township areas.

Comparisons of socio-economic factors include education, health status and access to medical schemes, use of smartphones, differences in income and levels of employment and travel times to work between township and non-township areas.

Household survey data includes data on household services, available telecommunications, use of different transport modes, access to public services, hunger, agricultural production, household income and wealth status

These analyses highlight the importance of leveraging innovative methods to provide data-driven insights for sustainable growth and to address the diverse needs of township residents.

Mapping Social Survey Results

Circle Point Analysis

Circle Point Analysis (CPA) is a qualitative method for rapidly mapping social survey results so that any discerning patterns can be identified. The points represent randomly selected survey respondents while the centre of the point circle is where the interviews were conducted. The colours of the points represent responses to questions in the survey. The above map shows the distribution of households with different Living Standard Measures (LSM) in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa.

Small Area Estimation

Small area estimation uses statistical and machine learning methods to model and map social surveys results at small geographic levels. It is a quantitative method that allows survey results to be accurately mapped. AfricaScope uses these methods to model nationally representative surveys and map aspects such as LSMs, income, unemployment and consumer data.
